hi all,

great idea with the forum!

i (and many other 500 modules diyers) tried to contact api for the API VPR Alliance worksheet but got no response - any chance of posting the information online?

I have the sheet that API sent me for the VPR spec, but the pdf file size limit is just low enough so that I can't attach a single PDF page. The limit is 19.5kB right now, any chance for 25kB?

Does API have some policy for releasing the VPR spec?

Maybe we should check with API, I'll send off an email to Gordon.

Stay tuned (and my bb guru will be adjusting the attachment specs in the next day or so, sorry about that).

hey,

that would be awesome. api shouldnt have a problem with that - they surely profit from the 500 series hype.

I've attached a zipped version (the zip file size limit is larger for some reason). This should have all the info you need. API didn't tell me to sign a NDA or that I couldn't send the spec to anyone. Besides, I actually received the spec from someone else before API ever got back to me...

Let me know if you have any questions about the format.

Thanks Ian for posting the spec. We have asked API if it is OK to post it here, and I am hopeful they will be supportive.

I did expect to see technical (CAD) diagrams of the exact dimensions, that would be very helpful for developers no?

I've attached my own drawing of the mechanical spec. If anyone is uneasy about this being posted feel free to pull it. It is my own drawing so I don't see why there should be a problem. I just took a break from work a busted this out fast; if anyone sees a mistake, let me know.

Word! Back to work...

New to the grp , sorry if it's an obvious question but
anyone had plans , ideas or thoughts for making the rack ?

there's seems to be a large mark up on the psu unit's and a pro
rack would look better but ..........................

Wow, I had not noticed that before, but the spec calls for the 15 pin connector. That would mean a one sided edge connector, no? Or does it mean that the both sides are tied (conductive) to eachother?

15 pin connector.
i have seen two different connectors used, one has a single termination (conductive), on the back side, and the edge connector has both sides tied together (conductive), on the face.
the other has two termination's on the back, but again both sides are tied together (conductive), just tied (conductive), on the back.
but the 500 format is only considered to be a 15 pin connection.
regardless sides are tied (conductive), together.

Old thread I know but still relevant, I do believe! :)

Thanks for the docs Ian. I was searching for them and ran across this cool-ass forum.

In my own doings, I have found that the old 550, vintage 550a, some 550b's and the APSI 559's are clearly 5.875" from back of front panel to edge connector. I assume that API changed the depth sometime during Paul's reign. Probably a good thing cause the older eg's don't feel like they seat far enough. No connection issues here, just a feel thing I guess.

their was a run were some were done longer them they should have.
as i recall these were corrected and everything is as it should be.
if you have a lunchbox that is deeper then it should be i would contact API for the fix.
i believe they just shim thing up.

Hey, what up Pan.

Not exactly a lunchbox here...well, sort of except mine has faders, busing, sends and good ole summing too! Circa 1976 :p

I am working on 2 new(old) pres and wanted to make sure that the depth was spot on with the VPR specs. If I followed the old cards from my desk, they would be 1/16" short of current spec. Story of my life x 100 I guess.

I want to make sure they fit in your rack properly when I send them out for a review!! :D

from the back of the faceplate to the end of the edge card should be 5.938'' +/- .002'' as per the VPR Alliance specks.
i would not go under the 5.938''.

I did not understand one thing.
To build a preamp:
For the output at +4dBu level?
Pins two and three are shorted together?
What is the difference?
For the input from MIC:
Pins seven and eight are shorted together?
Pins nine and ten are shorted together?
What is the difference?
In the 512C seems are shorted together!

ferrarofcf, did you ever get an answer to this?! (Long time ago.)

I've wondered before why the two level stuff. Perhaps the consoles used the lower level internally - I don't know. But 2 and 4 for output and 8 and 10 for input are certainly fine.

How is your preamp?

I'm not sure about the different levels either but my console has no connection to the lower level pins, only the +4's like typical.
